About

Recently booked by ESNS, MaMA, MIL and Sudwave, Whales have release their eponymous debut album in 2018, via independent tastemaker label Omnichord Records and toured Europe.
Following the breakout success of their ex-band mate Surma – who was recently featured on Music Week in the shortlist for the IMPALA European Album Of The Year - the band are ready to introduce their alluring fuse of classical sounds and indie electronica with new fans. Their first single ‘Big Pulse Waves’ received extensive national radio coverage which led to the trio securing slots at huge international festivals including NOS Alive and Thermometer Festival.
Their sonically expansive sound is technically impressive, with track ‘Beyoncé, I Love You’ enshrouded in shoegaze rhythms and soft electronica, the distorted vocals offering a delicate backdrop for the musical production. The heavy bass rhythms in number ‘Twerp’ are hauntingly beautiful, layered with melancholic lyricism and evocative vocal talent. Whales offer some insight behind their creative process: “More than writing about our music, we like to show it to people who work with the craft every day. Who live and breathe their music. They are the artists we want to associate ourselves with, who have plenty of legitimacy in their field of interest”.
The band note the late Portuguese composer and pianist Jorge Peixinho as one of their greatest musical inspirations, drawing on his classic piano and electronic hybrids to help transport their music into otherworldly dimensions. This artistic agenda has been the driving force behind two visually arresting videos, directed and produced by the creative collective Casota. The accompanying visuals for ‘How Long’ and ‘Ghost’ are devastatingly dark, and stand in stark contrast to the youthful joviality expressed in the music video for their debut single ‘Big Pulse Waves’.
From this whole year and a half of shows all around Europe, Whales met some international artists who they decided to challenge to remix their songs. 5 artists 5 songs 5 different countries. In the past November 7th were released the first two. "Ghost" remixed by Fragrance., a Synthpop French artist. "How Long" remixed by the eletronic duo from Indonesia Bottlesmoker.
